4 States Statehood (858)
While there were some efforts in 1939 to create four separate stamps to commemorate the 50th Anniversaries of the Statehood of North and South Dakota, Montana, and Washington (in fact there was even a proposal to create 4 stamps just for the North Dakota anniversary), the Postmaster General eventually opted for only one stamp...but with separate First Day Cities and cancellations. "First Day" cancellations were to be made available in the capitol cities of each of the states on the dates that the anniversaries fell. Thus, North and South Dakota would be on November 2, Montana on November 8 and Washington on November 11. And rather than use the regular FDOI cancellation, each state would have a cancellation reflecting: '(NAME OF STATE) ADMITTED TO UNION N0V. (specific date,) 1889.'
I have opted to organize the cachets for this issue by State, using the usual abbreviation for each state (ND,SD,MT,WA) as a prefix for each cachet variety with the idea that ND1 would be similar to SD1, etc but specific to that state. Each state will have a separate page in this catalog for the cachets.
As with Crosby's work on prior issues there are many intricacies in Crosby's cachets that may not be noticed on first glance. Most of these are found in the type WGC-2 cachets for each state (i.e., the cachets with 4 stars surrounding each State's Seal.) Things to watch for include the following:
1. The order of the states in the top portion of the cachet and even how many states are on each line. (In most, but not all cases, the first state listed is the state for which the cachet was designed.)
2. Whether the stars point UP, DOWN, or are angled. (Note that the Planty catalog does not distinguish the direction of the stars.)
3. Whether the text of 'First Day Issue' is in ALL CAPS or Initial Caps.
4. Whether the text at the bottom of the cachet is in ALL CAPS or Initial Caps and with some differences as to size and placement of that text.
Of course there are also color varieties and other minor differences that I have tried to note on the following pages.
