Roosevelt Memorial (930-33)
President Franklin Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage in Warm Springs, Georgia. At that time the USPOD was working on the design for the United Nations Conference stamp and there was some thought to prepare a stamp in honor of Roosevelt for that occasion. But with less than two weeks before the conference it was quickly decided that there was not time enough for that to be done. In mid May, Postmaster General Frank C. Walker announced that there would be a set of 4 stamps issued as a tribute to the late President. The denominations were set to be 1c, 2c, 3c, and 5c. The stamps were released on different days, with the 3c released first, on June 27 and the 5c last, on January 30, 1946 on what would have been Roosevelt's 64th birthday.
The colors of the 4 stamps were as follows: 1c, green; 2c red; 3c purple; and 5c blue. For the most part, Crosby's cachets were issued in those colors. Even though many stamps can be found on Crosby cachets with different colors, I will list them based on the colors as I did for the National Defense Series of 1940. There will be separate pages for each color...with a final page for cachets that do not fit within the color variety.
