US Frigate Constitution (951)
For many years, Crosby had been urging the creation of a stamp honoring the US Frigate Constitution or 'Old Ironsides' as it was affectionately known. The stamp was finally released on October 21, 1947. Unfortunately, Walter Crosby would not live to see the official release of the stamp. He died a few weeks before that, on September 28, 1947 at the age of 65. While I have not seen a specific cause of death, one report indicates that he died "suddenly" which might mean a heart attack or something similar. Immediately below is a cover with a Crosby cachet that was postmarked on the day of his death.
Crosby's wife continued to produce first day covers until early 1949.
