2c Reds With Cachets
Crosby added bold red raised print cachets to some of the 2 cent red covers of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Most of these covers have a simple one line "FIRST DAY ISSUE" cachet with the city of cancellation added below. I particularly like the cover for #657 due to the striking image on the back of the cover.
The second cover shown below (a 2nd Day DC cancel for Scott #654) is different of course. In his book on Crosby, Stroebel describes a similar cover using the same design for the 2c Carolina Charlston stamp (Scott #683) which was issued in 1930. That one has a black and white photograph in the space where the cover below just has an empty space. As with the Carolina cover, the cancellation is on the 2nd day which makes sense given the fact that the cachet reflects the White House rather than the subject of the stamp. While Stroebel suggests that the 2c Carolina Charlston cover represents the first thermographic Crosby FDC, the cover below would appear to predate that by nearly a year.
(Upon further review, it appears more likely that the cachets on 654-1 and 683-1 were added by Crosby in the late 1930's)
