Susan B. Anthony (784)
Crosby created a number of different cachets for the Susan B. Anthony issue. Note that the stars for this issue and some of the Army-Navy set may appear to be pointing up or down.
Also, almost hidden in the Planty catalog (and certainly overlooked by most dealers and collectors) is that on some of the cachets for this issue and the Army-Navy series there are two versions of photos showing a night view of the U. S. Capitol Building. As can be seen below....these are two distinct photos.
|
Night View, Type 1
|
Night View, Type 2
|
The differences in the photos are as follows:
Type 1 - Building is thin. Top tower is visible. Bottom right corner has what appears to be smears of lighter color with similar shading behind tower. There are no prominent balls of light.
Type 2 - Building is wide. Top tower is not visible. No smears at right side or shading behind tower. Very prominent balls of light in foreground of picture.
Based on these differences, it is clear that these are two distinct photos. And if you look carefully, there is a mention of this difference on page 33 of Volume XI of the Planty Catalog. (See the references in 793-22b.2 to the photo in 793-22c and in 793-22b.3 to the photo in 792-22d.)
